In spite of the high fares they charged, coaches were often full. Road surfaces in many parts of Ireland were usually very good, because they carried much lighter traffic than in England. In more remote areas, however, such as parts of Kerry, Mayo, Galway and Donegal, there were virtually no roads at all.
