Until Queen’s College opened in Belfast the only university in Ireland had been Trinity College, Dublin which catered for Church of Ireland students. The establishment of the college in Belfast, together with its sister colleges in Galway and Cork meant that university colleges were now open to students of all religious denominations. Of course, a university education in Belfast in the middle of the 19th century was only an option for wealthy families.
