Summary: Gathering Kelp

Key dates:

In coastal areas, particularly along the west coast of Ireland, farming was often combined with fishing. Many of these coastal dwellers also used kelp to fertilise their land. Kelp was produced by burning big stacks of seaweed which had been gathered on the shore.
