Summary: Description examples of early burials

Key dates:

There are no Irish examples of Mesolithic burials or beliefs. However, there are examples from this period from other parts of Europe and Scandinavia. The Spanish rock paintings show dancing which may have some ritual meanings. Some people were buried with tools and jewellery items so they may have believed that these were required in some form of afterlife. Skeletal remains from this period have been found in Denmark and these tell us that burial was preferred to cremation.
