Summary: Emigrants at Cork 1

Key dates:

This 1851 sketch of emigrants on the quays at Cork gives some indication of the pressure on Irish ports during and immediately after the Famine. In the decade 1845-55, an astonishing 2.1 million emigrated from Ireland. Note the contrast with the 1840 painting in the next image.
