Summary: Immigrants Disembarking at the Battery, New York

Key dates:

This Samuel Waugh painting – Immigrants disembarking at the Battery, Castle Garden, New York – was done around 1855. The scene reflects a happy atmosphere as well-dressed immigrants await their luggage on the quayside. The reality was very different. For the vast majority of the new Irish immigrants life was very tough especially for the first few years.
