Summary: The Bateson Family

Key dates:

Family portraits were very popular with the wealthy commercial classes. This 1762 work shows the Bateson family. Bateson had made his money as a merchant in Belfast. The painting was probably done by Strickland Lowry, though like many such 18th century portraits it was not signed. In the background there are prints of the King, Queen and Prime Minister. Over the next few years the Batesons had their portrait painted by other artists.
