Summary: Irish speakers

Key dates:

By the end of the 19th century the number of people who spoke Irish as their only language was very small. As the graphs show the decline of the language had been spectacular. The main cause of this rapid decline had been the famine which had devastated Irish speaking communities in western counties such as Donegal.
