Just before the outbreak of the First World War Ireland got its first chain shops. These retailers, such as Lipton’s, sold the same goods throughout their chain stores in Britain and Ireland. They concentrated on food items but they were immediately successful as their bulk-buying allowed them to sell goods cheaply and undercut the corner shop in price.
