Summary: Street Traders

Key dates:

The increase in the number of permanent shops reduced the number of street traders. These peddlers, as they were sometimes known, still attended fairs and markets, and many of them were old people whose families had a tradition of street trading. By the beginning of the 20th century they tended to sell novelty items rather than the general provisions they had pedalled in earlier years.
