Summary: Coal Importing

Key dates:

Coal was a vital fuel both for domestic use and in the factories and railways. Even at the end of the 19th century most of the coal was being shipped from England and Scotland on sailing colliers rather than steamboats. The photograph shows colliers being unloaded at Queen’s quay in Belfast.
