Canal transport had been important in Ulster since the middle of the 18th century. Although the development of railways had taken much of the traffic away from waterways, the canal system was still used to move heavy goods such as coal which was brought inland along canals by barges from the ports of Belfast or Newry. The photograph taken at the beginning of the 20th century shows a busy scene on the canal quay at Portadown.
