Summary: The Leader

Key dates:

In 1900 D P. Moran, a gifted journalist and Gaelic League enthusiast, founded a Dublin weekly paper, the Leader. It was a great success and its opinions proved very influential. The Leader promoted cultural nationalism based on Catholic and Gaelic values and it urged its readers to buy Irish products and ignore goods imported from the mainland. The paper became famous for its aggressive advertising of Irish manufacturing. Just like An Claidheamh Soluis its advertisements for Irish goods appeared in English.
