Summary: Literacy

Key dates:

Literacy levels in Ireland rose sharply in the late 19th century. The existence of census data from 1841 and the compulsory registration of marriages from 1864 have enabled historians to calculate with some accuracy increases in basic literacy skills. The growth of National Schools undoubtedly contributed to improvement in literacy rates and by 1900 more than 500,000 children were enrolled in such schools.
