Summary: Terraced Housing

Key dates:

Raphael Street was in ‘the markets’ area of Belfast close to the city centre. The photograph shows working class housing before the First World War and the cobbled street and footpaths were typical of this period. Embedded into the wall near ground level you can see ‘foot-scrapers’ which were used to scrape dirt off boots before entering the house. Many of these city dwellers were newcomers to Belfast and they tried hard to maintain their way of life in spite of their new surroundings. In their small back-yards many of the householders kept hens and even pigs for their own consumption.
