Summary: Farmhouse interior

Key dates:

A typical farmhouse kitchen had an open turf fire with chairs positioned on each side of the hearth. Above the fire stood the ‘gallows’, a heavy wrought iron pot-crane from which a pot could be hung over the fire. This photograph shows soda bread baking on a griddle. Essential implements such as bellows and a pair of tongs are clearly visible. On the mantelshelf there is an assortment of tea caddies, while the table on which the food was prepared was always close to the window to maximise the light. Large, smooth flag stones were used for the floor and the bedroom which is through the door on the left and would have enjoyed the heat from the chimney breast.
