Summary: The Workhouse

Key dates:

In Ulster some of the old workhouses were developed into infirmaries. By the end of the 19th century most workhouse inmates were older people who no longer worked. The introduction of the Old Age Pension in 1909 reduced the need for the workhouses. The photograph shows a group of old men enjoying a cup of tea outside the workhouse on Belfast’s Lisburn Road.
