Summary: Sand Eels

Key dates:

This photograph taken in the 1890s on the shore of Mulroy Bay, Co. Donegal shows a group of local people digging for sand eels. These gatherings took place at low tides and the eels collected were either used for food or fish bait. Sand eels were often salted and dried and eaten in the summer before the field crops were harvested.
