Summary: Meat safe

Key dates:

A meat safe was attached to the back wall of a house outside the kitchen. Before the widespread use of refrigerators, meat safes were used to keep perishable foods such as milk and meat in warm weather. Often they were erected on the shaded part of the house and the mesh door allowed cool air to circulate.
