Summary: Rising Incomes

Key dates:

Following the famine in the 1840s farmers’ incomes had been rising steadily. With the increased profits strong farmers were now able to invest in new machinery and buildings as well as buying more livestock. The result was that by the end of the 19th century there had been a shift away from arable to livestock farming. This was resented by many of the poorer smallholders who continued to rely on potatoes.
