Summary: Manual work

Key dates:

In spite of the increased use of machinery, a great deal of manual labour was still common on the land. In bogland, which was either being drained or prepared for turf cutting, fir blocks had to be broken up and removed by hand. These blocks consisted of very hard wood and they had to be split using a large fir hatchet. The men in the photograph are using this tool.
