Summary: Eel Fishermen

Key dates:

At both Kilrea and Toomebridge on the River Bann eels which had been channelled into narrow weirs were trapped in large nets. The eel fishermen then emptied the nets into large wooden containers. All this work had to be done at night when the eels were running. October was the best month for eel catching and local people often enjoyed an “eel supper” at this time of the year.
