In 1873 Edward Harland set up a ropework company to meet demand from the shipyard. The firm imported hemp which was then bathed in oil. By 1900 the Belfast Ropework Company was the largest ropeworks in the world. In addition to making the best quality rope for shipping, the company also produced twine for new reaping machines on farms and cord for fishing nets.
