Summary: Yardmen at work

Key dates:

The success of Harland and Wolff in this period was due to its willingness to develop new technology. Iron and steel ships were replacing wooden ships and steam turbines were replacing sail as a source of power. The photograph shows modern technology with yardmen using hydraulic power to rivet the great steel plates together. The cloth cap was worn by virtually every worker.
