Summary: American Railroad

Key dates:

America’s massive railway construction programme in the later decades of the 19th century provided lots of jobs for newly-arrived, unskilled Irish labourers. This photograph shows work in progress on the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming. As in the coalmines, Irish rail workers became heavily involved in the new trade union movement from the 1880s on.
