Summary: Travelling West

Key dates:

As America opened up in the 2nd half of the 19th century, new immigrants travelled into the west. This letter from John Henry to his mother in 1867 describes how he has left Illinois and moved to Kansas farther west. He described how he now had a huge amount of very good farming land. The journey by wagon out west had taken he and his family 4 weeks.
