Summary: St. Patrick’s Day, New York

Key dates:

From the middle of the 19th century the Catholic Church was led by Irish-born bishops. Each St. Patrick’s Day the Church was involved in the organisation of the great New York parade which allowed Irish immigrants a special opportunity to display their Irish identity. In this painting of the 1874 parade in New York you can see many symbols of Irishness.
