Summary: Women emigrants

Key dates:

One of the most important aspects of Irish emigration in the second half of the 19th century was the high number of women emigrants, equalling the figures for men. The illustration shows the large number of women boarding the ship. This meant that in the USA Irish men could marry Irish women and this had the effect of strengthening the Irish community in America.
