Summary: Lough Derg

Key dates:

St. Patrick’s Purgatory, a holy island in Lough Derg, Co. Donegal is still an important location for Catholics. It is visited for up to 3 days during which believers only take bread and water as a penance for their sins. At the turn of the century the island had many visitors who walked barefoot along beds of rough stones which had been laid by monks living on the island.
