Summary: Feast Days

Key dates:

Drinking alcohol played an important part in many of Ireland’s feast days and folk festivals. Whiskey was readily available and poteen, which could be made easily from potatoes, was in widespread use in many rural areas even though it was illegal. In 1903 St. Patrick’s Day became a public holiday and many of those abstaining from alcohol during Lent broke their pledge for that day.
