Summary: Bronze Age Settlement in General
Key dates:
Archaeological evidence confirms that Ireland was extensively populated in this period, especially in the north and east of the country.
It is most likely that the people of the Bronze Age had permanent settlements of one or more families with houses, as well as storage facilities, livestock enclosures and field systems. Such settlements would have been surrounded by sturdy oak fences.
There would have been an open air cooking place and somewhere for meat to be hung out to dry.
Some of these settlements, called crannogs, were located in lakes, either natural or man-made. Principally for reasons of security.
