Summary: Horse Shoes

Key dates:

Obviously horse shoes were a very common sight in the late 19th century. In summer evenings men played ‘horse shoes’ as they threw the shoes towards a pole stuck in the ground. Horse shoes were also a symbol of good luck. In houses they were often nailed to the back of a door or placed above the door with the open ends pointing up to hold the good luck.
