Summary: Souperism

During the Famine years Protestants tried to convert the Catholic poor in some areas of the south and west. This was known as proselytism. The illustration shows the Protestant missionary settlement on Achill Island in Mayo which claimed a huge number of converts in 1848 and 1849. To attract converts these Protestant missionaries offered food – usually soup – and this is where the term ‘souperism’ originates.
