Summary: Highways Act 1613

Key dates:

In 1613 parliament’s most useful action was to pass the Highways Act which provided for the maintenance of roads, cashes (rough bridges) and passes. Each parish was allowed to obtain free labour and carts from the parishioners for six days a year in order to keep the roads in repair. As a result of this, inland roads began to improve.
