Summary: Lord’s Prayer in Irish

Key dates:

Irish studies were important in the colleges abroad especially that run by the Franciscans at Louvain. There was already a Protestant Prayer Book and Bible in Irish so there was a need to produce a Catholic Catechism and other books. The press at Louvain was set up with Irish type and from there many religious books in Irish for Catholics were produced. The picture shows the Lord’s Prayer in Irish as it was printed at Antwerp in 1611. This was the first Catholic work to be printed in Irish.
