Summary: Annals of 4 Masters

Key dates:

During the early Stuart period some monks in the Gaelic areas worked to save what was left of the Irish native culture. Under the reign of Charles I (1625-49), Brathair Bocht Micheal O Cleirigh travelled all over the country collecting and copying manuscripts. He and three fellow Franciscans spent the winter in the small monastery in Donegal where they wrote what has become known as The Annals of the Four Masters.
