Summary: Newtown Jerpoint Settlement

Key dates:

Aerial photograph of the deserted medieval town of Newtown Jerpoint, Co Kilkenny. The only upstanding building today is that of the medieval church of St Nicholas in the right of the picture. The remains of medieval houses in the field to the left of the church were removed during the nineteenth century but traces of the plot or garden boundaries for each household can be seen as a series of faint lines in the fields which are now grazed by sheep. This was a successful town during the thirteenth - fourteenth centuries. Jerpoint Abbey can be seen in the top left corner of the picture.
