Summary: Homes of Very Rich

Key dates:

For the very rich, the ultimate symbol of your wealth was a fine mansion. In 1722 William Connolly, Speaker of the Irish Parliament, began the construction of Castletown House in Co Kildare. This design was much copied and a similar house was built at Castlecoole, Co Fermanagh. It took ten years to build and cost £60,000.
