Summary: Late 17th Century Changes in Architecture

Key dates:

Towards the end of the 17th century the prosperity of the country was reflected in the extra expense to which the rich went in building. They began to build comfortable houses with rooms on two or three floors, rather than fortified homes. Houses of wood and stone were becoming more common as were chimneys. The poor still lived in mud cabins at the back of ditches.
