Summary: Souterrains

Key dates:

Many raths had underground passages with chambers leading off them. Some of these were very narrow and could only be accessed by creeping along. The entrance was always carefully concealed. The reason for these souterrains is unclear. They may have been used as places of refuge for families under attack; they were used for storage of grain and other goods during times of peace.
