The Vikings established towns in Ireland. These were built around ports in the 9th and 10th centuries. Dublin was the first and best known of these towns. It was built around a low hill, south of the River Liffey in 841AD. Other important towns were Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford, Cork and Limerick and were built later. In 853, the great Viking leader, Olaf the White, arrived in Dublin. Most of the Irish Vikings submitted to him and he made himself King of Dublin. Under him, Dublin became a prosperous city from which the Vikings attacked Scotland, England and Isle of Man.
