Summary: Castles

Key dates:

Castles became very important focal points for people in the middle ages. Towns often developed around them and important churches were built. These castles reminded people that the Anglo Normans were now in control of the area and would not tolerate opposition. Within the castle’s walls existed a number of craft workshops such as candle makers, armourers and alchemists.
