Summary: Big House

Key dates:

The big houses, which were scattered around Ireland, all possessed large estates. This meant that they could be self-sufficient in meat, game and fish. The beer was usually brewed on the estate. Bread was made from locally grown corn and ground on a simple quern. This variety and quality was in sharp contrast to the cottiers who lived on potatoes and buttermilk.
