Summary: Hair Styles

Key dates:

Men’s hair was often worn long and brought forward over the eyes in glib fashion. Some shaved the front of their heads and this annoyed the English. Another Irish habit which annoyed the English administration was the wearing of a croimeal (moustache) without a beard. All of these were forbidden by the administration which also banned the “glib” in 1537. This may have been because they felt that a long fringe could help disguise a thief.
