Summary: Linen Industry

Key dates:

In the post restoration period (from 1660) the Duke of Ormonde brought skilled workers from the continent to start linen manufacturing in Carrick-on-Suir and Chapelizod. From the late 18th century some improving landlords, like Earl of Shannon, started linen industry. Shannon had 94 looms at work at Clonakilty. However the main centre of this industry was in Ulster where it was mainly a domestic industry. Bleaching and finishing were the only two processes in linen manufacturing which were done on a professional basis. There was a busy linen market in Lurgan and an important brown linen market at Banbridge.
