Summary: Metal and Ports

Key dates:

Iron smelting grew as an industry especially in Munster where Boyle’s ironworks were said to contain about 3,000tons of iron in various stages of manufacturing. Ports were active import centres for raw materials for industry such as sugar refining, glass blowing, iron founding, salt refining and brewing. Brewing was very much in evidence and, although there was a range of quality in beer, the whiskey seems to have been of a high standard.
