Summary: Scottish Planters

Key dates:

Two Scotsmen, both from Ayrshire, had carried out plantations in Ulster before the main plantation in 1610. They were Hugh Montgomery and James Hamilton. They planted Counties Antrim and Down with fellow Scotsmen and these were very successful. In fact by the 1630s these plantations were doing so well that there was almost mass emigration from Scotland to Ulster.
