Summary: Normans into Ireland

Key dates:

The first Normans came in 1169, bringing with them many footsoldiers and knights. The most important of these was Richard de Clare, the Earl of Pembroke who was nicknamed Strongbow. He married Dermot’s daughter, Aoife, and soon was king of Leinster. He remained very powerful until Henry II’s visit to Ireland in 1171 when he considerably reduced the power of the one he regarded as an upstart.
