The monarchy was restored in 1660 and the new king was Charles II. He was tolerant but many of the Protestants who governed Ireland were not. The new Roman Catholic Archbishop of Armagh, Oliver Plunkett, opened a college at Drogheda to educate priests.
Some towns had ornate mass houses but most were much simpler. The Church of Ireland had its special status as the state church restored to it. Two Archbishops and ten bishops were consecrated on one day in Dublin in 1661. One of these bishops was Jeremy Taylor who removed many Presbyterian clergymen from his diocese because they refused Episcopal ordination.
