Summary: Counter Reformation

Almost as soon as the Reformation took place there were people and groups who worked to turn people back to Roman Catholicism. This was known as the Counter Reformation. It was begun in Ireland by the religious society called the Jesuits. The leader was Father David Wolfe. Three bishops were appointed to vacant dioceses while Richard Creagh was made Archbishop of Armagh. Both Wolfe and Creagh were imprisoned at some time even though Wolfe did encourage loyalty to the queen. Catholic schools were allowed to continue under Elizabeth and the Counter Reformation succeeded against the will of the queen.
